Happy Birthday, Trinidad and Tobago

Chris Dennis – Between Worlds video

The 31st August is the 50th anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago’s independence from its colonial master, the United Kingdom. I was lucky enough to live there for 3 years in the late 1990s – early noughties and surfed its many breaks. The surfers are friendly (once you get to know them and respect them) and it is home to some world class breaks as well as lots of average breaks. Some highlights for me were:

– on my first surf trip, walking across a beach at Balandra used by fisherman, stepping over discarded sharkheads,

– the long drives through lush rainforest up to the NE tip at Toco (and then back along the north coast to Sans Souci and other spots) and the even longer drive back dodging drunk day-trippers

– some uncrowded midweek hurricane swells at Toco with Jimbo and a bonkers Swede

– the ultra critical and scary take off at Tobago’s top break.

If you want to know more about surfing in T+T, a good place to start is the Jtography website of my old mate and surf photographer, Jimbo O’Connor, including a clip from his film about inspirational international surfer  Chris Dennis. It deserves to be win a few surf film awards.
